Five Fold Records is a new London based label looking to release quality dance music. They started strong with a jazz funk influenced release from AD Bourke, who worked his broken discoid rhythms into the labels self imposed lack of genre and tempo. Dokta Venom (Daniel Maunick) is up next here and does not disappoint. His ‘Burnt Roses’ EP came out on Vinyl last week (3rd March) and is set to be released digitally for the masses on 14th March. This one is definitely worth seeking out on wax to fully appreciate the sound.
We start the record with ‘Only U.’ Swirling pads and a soulful vocal are driven up a notch by a solid bass line and crisp kick-drum. This is a straight up house track for lovers of the likes of Mr Fingers, Moodymann or perhaps Kink and Neville Watson, showing obvious inspiration from Detroit and Chicago.
The title track, ‘Burnt Roses’ gives us a more complex broken nu-jazz rhythm, reminiscent of a chopped up ‘Motor City’ from Theo Parrish’s Ugly Edits. This highlights more influences of the Dokta, and provides a refreshing change to the straight up opener, with interesting and expertly programmed electronics.
The third offering, ‘Rum Vapour’, is an altogether more floaty affair, with a distant vocal overplayed with clash snaps and another fairly driving bassline. Think skipping beats with a garage swing.
Finally we get out the ‘Space Dust’. With a slap bass and Fender Rhodes chords showing us the way into a fresh summer vibe.
