This new track from Jamie XX, released last week, unsurprisingly caught our attention at YAMB. His talents never fail to impress – The XX are one of the best UK bands that have emerged in recent years and his DJ sets always get crowds going. His remix work never becomes tiresome and his own production ‘Far Nearer’ has been a regular on our stereo since its 2011 release. Lets also not forget ‘We’re New Here,’ his stunning collaboration with the late Gil Scott-Heron.
‘Sleep Sound’ begins with a tantalising melody, which reminds us of ‘Ribbons’ from Four Tet’s ‘Ringer EP.’ In comes the perfectly snipped vocal, slowly teasing the listener before the deep, soft bass pads drop, contrasted with crisp, intricate drum patterns. Effective use of filters brings layers of sound in and out of your audio perspective creating a mesmerising experience. The track really grows on you and gives enough variation to keep you hooked. This is the first part of a double A-Side out on London based label Young Turks on May 5th. We can’t wait to hear the second track ‘Girl’ but for now this will definitely do.
